Sam Joe

Sam Joe is an Australian former professional Rugby League footballer who represented the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League (NRL).
Following his sporting career, he returned to the Torres Strait to contribute his skills and leadership toward the well-being of his community.
He currently serves as a Senior Ranger with the Torres Strait Island Regional Authority (TSRA), playing an active role in the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of land, sea, and cultural resources for Traditional Owners.
In his role, Sam undertakes environmental monitoring, including seagrass surveys that support the health of dugong and turtle habitats.
He also contributes to cultural heritage management, reef and coastal rehabilitation projects, and the integration of traditional ecological knowledge into contemporary conservation practices.
His work effectively bridges cultural authority with environmental science, strengthening stewardship and sustainable outcomes for Country. Sam is widely respected for his humility, strong family values, and grounded leadership.
He participates in cultural ceremonies, community events, traditional dance, and customs, modelling the importance of cultural continuity. Through his mentorship and example, Sam inspires young people to embrace their identity, connect with language, songs, and Country, and develop resilience through sports.
His leadership fosters confident, culturally grounded future generations within the Torres Strait.
